Upcoming Events - Through August 2009

[From Cubmaster Drew Wade]

Dear Pack 11 Cubs and Parents:

Happy New Year to all in our Pack 11 family! Here are a few updates of what's coming up:

1) Schedule for the remainder of the year:

To assist with your planning, all of the pack-level events for the remainder of the scouting year as well as summer 2009 are now on the Google Calendar (on the right side of the screen). As you will see, we have lots of fun activities to look forward to in Pack 11!

2) Pinewood Derby:

Our next pack event is the ever-popular Pinewood Derby which will be held on Friday, January 30th in the Wickliffe gym. Car weigh-in and race times will be announced shortly. Everyone should by now have a Pinewood Derby car kit provided by the pack. If not, please send me a "reply" and we'll make sure your son receives a kit. I'm also attaching a copy of the official rules for the Pinewood as a guide in building your cars.

3) Pack Trip to CoCo Key:

On February 8th, we will have a super-cool pack trip to CoCo Key water resort in Newark, Ohio. Many thanks to Caryn Kanel for setting up this event! Caryn has put together an excellent reservation form for CoCo Key which will help us with planning, reservations, and costs. Please print out and return this attached form along with any required payment to pack treasurer Dave O'Neil no later than February 4th. We will also be collecting these forms and payments at the Pinewood Derby. NOTE: please use the cost schedule on the attached form as your guide for calculating costs, not the CoCo Key website's costs....why? Caryn has negotiated a discounted scouting rate AND we are partially supplementing costs from our pack treasury to make things more affordable (your popcorn sale dollars at work!)

Please make a note of all the upcoming events. We hope to see you all at the Pinewood Derby and CoCo Key!

Pinewood Derby - January 30th!

[From Drew Wade]

This year, the Pack 11 Pinewood Derby will be held on January 30, 2009 in the Wickliffe gym. Please note this is a Friday night. Start times will be announced closer to the event.

The Pinewood will be here before we know it! Download Pinewood Derby rules
Thanks to Steve Vallette for providing this document.

Many of you received your Pinewood Derby Car Kits at the last pack meeting. For those who were not able to attend this meeting, your car kits will be available through your den leaders. Please do not purchase a car kit through the Scout Shop...we have a kit for every Cub already purchased.

Our Pinewood Derby chair this year is Terry Thompson....thanks Terry!

Pinewood Derby Rules

[From Steve Vallette]

Official Pinewood Derby Rules for Pack 11!

Pinewood Derby Car Dimensions – Wood:

  • The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
  • The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
  • The car must have 1 ¾” clearance between the wheels.
  • The car must have 3/8” clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track.
  • The block may be shaped in any way that is desired with the following exceptions
  • For Staging at the start: Cars shall have a leading edge which is flat and parallel with the axles.
  • The leading edge should be between 0.5 (½) and 0.75 (¾) inches above the track.
  • Cars which “ride-up” on or wrap around the staging pegs may be run backwards, or disqualified, at the judges’ discretion.
  • No part of the car may extend beyond the front bumper, which rests against the starting pin.
  • Note: An electronic finish line will be used; therefore, it is recommended that extreme needle-nose designs be avoided.

Wheels:

  • Official BSA wheels must be used. The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded.
  • You may remove the seams and imperfections from the wheels.
  • The maximum wheel base will not exceed 4 1/2".
  • If the axles must be moved due to problems with the slots cut in the wood block, the axles must be within 1/4" of the original slots; Note: if you move the front wheels forward 1/4" the rear wheels must be moved forward an equal distance.

Axles:

  • The axles may be altered, polished and lubricated.

Weights and Attachment:

  • The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces.
  • The official race scale that is used at car check-in shall be considered final.
  • Weight may be added to the car and will be considered part of the car for purposes of all measurements.
  • "Weight" is considered to be any material on the car that is not provided in the kit.
  • All weight must be securely fastened to the car, e.g. by permanent glue, nails or screws, but not by "sticky substances", e.g. tape, or tack spray. Weights shall be passive, i.e. non-moveable, non-magnetic, non-electric, non-sticky, etc

Car Modifications Not Allowed:

  • Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited
  • The car must not ride on any type of springs
  • No starting devices. The car must be freewheeling.
  • No loose material of any kind, such as lead shot, may be used.

Other Pinewood Derby Race Rules:

  • Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race committee members can touch it.
  • If the car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged, the racer shall have 5 minutes to make a repair
  • Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete.
  • The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these specifications.
  • If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc., the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses that race. If, on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time, but without the disqualified car.
  • Single Trophy per Boy: No boy may win more than one trophy or ribbon. If a scout wins a trophy in the racing event, he will not win a trophy/ribbon for the Den races.

Pinewood Derby - A Scout's Perspective

[From our own Nickolas Kanel!]

Cub Scout Pack 11 held their Pinewood Derby on April 17th, 2007 at Wickliffe School. Scouts all brought cars they made at home from a block of wood. They weighed the cars and gave them a name. The cars raced against each other.

Trophies were given to the first, second and third place scouts. There were lots of other awards, too. There were winners from each den and awards like “most aerodynamic” and “best paint job.” We all had a great time!

Scouts, Start Your Engines!

Scouts, Start Your Engines!

It is once again time for the much anticipated Annual Pack 11 Pinewood Derby. Please review the information below about to successfully navigate from registration to the finishing line.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 614-579-0040 or e-mail me at svallette@limited-logistics.com.

Tuesday, April 17th! Arrive at the Blue (old) gym at 6:00 pm to begin the registration process.

First Stop: Your first stop is the registration desk. Here you will check in by giving your name and car's name (yes, we want you to name your car). Your car will be pre-weighed (this is only a pre-weigh-in, not the official weigh-in) and you will be assigned a race number.

Second Stop: The second stop will be the work area. If your car needs a little work - weight added/subtracted, wheels put on, or last minute pre-race adjustments. This is where to do it. We will have a hot-glue gun, a Dremel, some washers, and an "unofficial" scale for your use. If you don't need any adjustments go straight to stop 3.

Third Stop: After you have your car just the way you want it, your third stop is the official weigh-in. After this stop your car is officially checked in and no further adjustments can be made.

Registration will close at 6:40 sharp. So please register early

Fourth Stop: Take a seat and watch the fun!
